Birthdays

Someone is having a birthday today. Wonder who it could be?

Yes, I do get gypped.
  • Birthday presents are wrapped in Christmas paper.

  • "Go, grab one gift from under the tree for your birthday" my mother always said.

  • The one that pissed me off the most was the Birthday-Christmas card all-in-one. If looks could kill. Not my best game face moment.

Do you get the point that I don't like my birthday? I wish I could go back in time and change it, but if I could do that I would be one rich man. I'm not looking for pity. I just want you to know what a Christmas eve baby has to put up with.

I do love having birthdays and getting presents I'm not that much of a scrooge.

The best birthday I ever had was last year, for my birthday I got a car charger. The best part was, it was in July and it was in Birthday paper. Yes, I almost fainted right there on the spot. The card read " I know how much you hate your Birthday, so I thought I might make this one a little special for you." It's the little things in life that we always seems to remember and touch us the most. Yes, a tear may have welled up in my eye.

In honor of my Birthday I've decided in lieu of you giving me gifts, I'm going to give one lucky reader a Fandango layer cake by Kate Spain for Moda.

Leave a comment on this post to enter for a chance to win the Fandango layer cake. Only one entry per person, please. All duplicate entries will be deleted.

I will draw one winner using the Random Number Generator on Thursday, December 30th, 2010!

You have till midnight CST tonight to meet Pat Bravo of Art Gallery Fabric and get entered to win a FQ bundle of Modern Affair with some Nature Elements blenders. Check out the post here for a chance to win.

Until next time,

  1. I understand the feeling...I have a daughter with a birthday close to Christmas and have to be very careful to not combine the two celebrations with her as well. We started the tradition when she was still young of celebrating a 'kids' day 1/2 birthday, six months prior as a means to give her some additional recognition. Spoiled her, didn't we? At any rate,, really like the Fandango layer cake, and appreciate the opportunity to win it.

  5. Oh its lovely! I'll trade you, you can have a September birthday and I'll take Christmas Eve! Not really. Maybe you be surprised with Birthday wrapping paper next year!

  6. Happy Birthday, I have twin daughters whose birthdays are the 27th and every year since they were born the Christmas tree gets put away on the 26th so as they can celebrate their birthdays and no close family member has ever combined xmas/birthday present. The only problem was when they turned 21 all their friends were going to be away so i had their birthday beginning of November, so they got to celebrate twice. Please enjoy your birthday and then enjoy Christmas.

  7. Around here Birthdays are national holidays...so I proclaim today to be CHARLIE DAY...and in your honor everyone shall run around like crazy madmen, trying to get way too much done in too little time..May you have a wonderful Birthday and do something just for you!

  8. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! and then, Merry Christmas :)

  9. Happy Birthday!

Would love the fandango. I have some waiting for holidays to be over. Maybe by my birthday in late January, I can do something with it!

  10. Happy Birthday. I hope that you have a wonderful day today.

  11. Happy Birthday, Charlie! Three members of my family have birthdays in December and we always, always make as big of a deal about those birthdays as we do the ones in July. None of the combining with Christmas for them.

  12. Oh, Charlie! I can so relate. My birthday is early in Dec, but I got the same results. My brothers all got birthday parties and birthday gifts on their special day (even the one with with the Nov 27th birthday). I did usually get a birthday cake, but presents were always 'this is your Christmas present, too'. Doesn't make for happy childhood memories. Good thing I grew up and realized that giving is better than receiving! Today, just having someone say Happy Birthday is enough. So Happy Birthday, Charlie!!

  13. Happy Birthday to you. That stinks that you had to share your birthday with Christmas. I hope this one is filled with love and happiness :)

  14. Happy Birthday, Charlie!!! I completely understand your problem - our granddaughter's birthday is Dec. 16th, so we work hard not to combine the two holidays for her. My daughter's birthday is Feb. 29th - Leap Year Day - so I always used to tell her that on the years where she didn't have an actual "birthday", she could celebrate any day she wanted - just pick a date! So we've had parties in the summer, too - but most often she couldn't wait that long! Have a wonderful wonderful day - and pick me for that Fandango please!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Happy Birthday! A couple of people I know with birthdays on or near Christmas have a "half-birthday" every year in July. They have a party and everything. I think you should institute this as your new birthday policy.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Happy Birthday, Charlie. I think I know how you feel about your birthday. My mom's birthday was on Christmas Day. My dad and I were always careful to give her separate gifts and tried hard to find a card that was just a birthday card. She was always appreciative of what we did. I never thought of giving her a birthday in the summer; that would have been something unique and she probably would have loved it. Sounds like the summer birthday is the way to go for you.

Hope you have a great day and you do what you want to today.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  17. Happy Birthday! My son's b-day is the 19th and we try very hard to separate his b-day from Christmas. He gets presents in b-day wrapping paper and a cake and all the birthday fun (check out my latest blog entry for pix) with no mention of Christmas. As he gets older we might have to do his party in the summer since his little friends might be traveling on his b-day. I also have a high school friend whose b-day is today and he always felt cheated, too.

  18. Happy Birthday to you. Put up some party balloons today in your favorite color and don't forget to get a cake. :)

  19. I am sure everyone with birthday's this time of the year can totally relate. I was lucky in that mine doesn't come til the early part of January and then I had twins who tired to come early but finally waited till mid-January. I'm not sure which is worse, birthdays on Christmas or Christmas Eve or never having your own birthday as it is with twins.
    Happy Birthday! Enjoy YOUR day.

  20. happy birthday to you!! that was a very sweet gesture for your birthday last year! i'm not particularly fond of my birthday either, mostly because it's in the middle of the winter, and i kind of stopped really celebrating after i turned 22 a few years ago. but you should do something for yourself, get some birthday decorations for the house!

  21. Happy birthday, Charlie! May you have another prosperous and gifted year...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Happy Birthday Charlie! Perhaps you should continue to have a summer 'Official' birthday, if it's good enough for the queen ..... just sayin! Great fiveaway, have I told you how much I love Fandango!

  28. Let me try this again. My comment just "disappeared."

Happy Birthday! Hope that you have the VERY BEST day! Have you thought about celebrating "half-birthdays"? June 24th instead of Dec. 24th. My cousin does that with her children with December birthdays. Take care!

  29. Hope your birthday is as wonderful as you are. My 2 daughters and myself have birthday's within 2 weeks of Christmas. All capricorn girls. Good luck everyone

  31. Happy Birthday! I have a friend who is having a birthday today also. Merry Christmas tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow that does suck! I think you should set up a specific day.. 1/2 way thru the year for a Very, Merry UN-Birthday Party, and go full tilt on the thing.. Cake, Decorations, invitations, the whole thing.. Drink hearty.. (soda of course), It would be soooooo fun! But happy birthday anyhow :)

  33. I always wondered what my aunt and uncle did for my cousin (the youngest of three) who was born on Christmas day. Both my girls are summer birthdays, but good to keep in mind in case I have another....closer to Christmas.

    And Happy Birthday today!

    Merry Christmas Tomorrow!

  34. Happy birthday Charlie! Hope your day is spent doing whatever YOU want! My nephew's birthday was Tuesday so I know what you mean about the presents. One year my SIL had a 1/2 year birthday for him in June at the Zoo. It was so much fun! That was his favorite birthday if you ask him!
Thanks for sharing your birthday with us.
    Hugs,

  38. We have 4 birthdays in December...the 6th is my sister's which isn't too bad, the 14th is my granddaughters which is close, but ok...but my grandson's is today also. Dec 24th, Christmas Eve..I just called and sang him Happy Birthday!! He is such a joy.. He is 8 this year and loves to hear me sing to him... I always give him his gift early as I feel it gets lost in the Christmas shuffle.. I ALWAYS wrap in birthday wrap...and no green or red ever!!
Our second daughter's birthday is the 27th and we always had a sleep-over for her birthday...with the kids out of school the parents were happy to unload them for a night.LOL
I must confess to "sometimes" pulling out a christmas present and rewrapping it in birthday paper for her...but I think I only did that twice... We always had a birthday cake...

  44. Happy Birthday! As one December baby to another, I know how you feel.

My niece's birthday is also in December, two days before Christmas. They celebrate a half-birthday for her in June where they invite all her friends, whereas the one in Dec. is family. Anyway, hope yours is great! :o)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Happy birthday!! I hope you get some gifts in non-Christmas wrap. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Happy Birthday Charlie. I think all December Children get short-changed but the closer you get to Christmas, the harder it gets, especially for families on a budget. HOw special that someone gave you a special birthday celebration in the middle of the year.

  47. Happy Birthday!

Lewis Carroll had the right idea, maybe you don't want to celebrate celebrate your un-birthday everyday but once every year in July......

    ReplyDelete
  48. Happy Birthday! My son's birthday is the 21st, and I figure the best benefit for him is he's never had to go to school on his birthday. Mine was often on the first day of school. (I don't need the layer cake, in the off chance I win. I just wanted to say happy birthday!)

  54. Happy Birthday! I have a cousin whos birthday is today and another cousin whos birthday is the 26th. So there share your feeling. My Birthday always was during Lent and when I took birthday treats no one would eat it cos it was Lent. I hated that too.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Happy Birthday Charlie. I think you should pick a date to celebrate your half birthday day. But I also have this theory about celebrating birthday windows. Think of it this way, if a toddler gets to spend the day celebrating their lst birthday and a 100 year old person gets to take a year to celebrate their birthday, you are certainly deserving a couple of months to celebrate your birthday window. Thus, realize it is ok to let people know you are celebrating your birthday "window" for whatever period of time you feel appropriate.

  56. Wow Charlie, that is a really nice present you are giving to one of us! Happy Birthday to you. My kid's were both born the first week of January, so they (and I) feel your pain. Everyone's rather pre-occupied or party-pooped by that point. Maybe you could convince the church choir to sneak in the happy birthday song inbetween Christmas eve hymns? Hope you have a lovely day.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I know exactly how you feel! My birthday is Nov. 25th and always falls around Thanksgiving, so I get no special birthday celebration, it's always celebrated when we have Thanksgiving...it gets old, but I just grin and bear it. Happy Birthday! Thanks for the giveaway chance.

  61. Happy Birthday. My older sister knows just how you feel. Her birthday is the 22nd. I made sure to wrap her present in bright colorful stripes this year-no green or red to be found. But growing up we used to celebrate our half birthdays (my real one was november) in the summer so we could have swim parties. We got around that whole winter cold thing.

  63. One of my former neighbor had a son who was born on Christmas Eve. They always celebrated his birthday on June 24th so he'd have a celebration that was separate from the holiday. I always thought that was very neat.

I'd love to be entered into your generous giveaway! I do hope that there is a point in time where the day is just about YOU!

  64. Happy Birthday, Charlie! My youngest was due to be born on Christmas Day. I was glad she'd be a scheduled c-section so we could have her at least a week before that day. She ended up coming a month ahead! So, now she celebrates her birthday every year on or around Thanksgiving. Fortunately she's still a toddler, so she thinks all of the turkey and dressing are part of her party.

I hope you have a great birthday that many people make special separate from Christmas!

  84. Happy Birthday! I remember hating having a summer birthday as a kid, because I didn't get a day to celebrate at school. Everyone else got to celebrate on their birthday's and bring treats to class. I got lumped in the week of "summer birthday's" and it wasn't nearly as cool.
    Either way, enjoy your day!

  85. Happy Birthday! I once had 3 co-workers who all had birthdays on Christmas Day and experienced a similar situation. My birthday is around Halloween so most of my cakes were halloween-y with witches, black cats, and such. I do not like that either. Here's wishing you a very merry New Year's. Thank you for this giveaway as a Fandango layer cake will help chase the blues away.

  108. Happy Belated Birthday! You share it with my father, who dislikes it just as much as you do! However, we did try as children to make it the best we could for him each year. I hope that it was a wonderful day and that maybe you got at least one unexpected (wonderful) surprise!

  110. Yep, birthdays next to holidays can be the pits, can't they? My birthday is usually a couple of days away from Mother's Day, so I generally get a combined gift. And I have twin daughters. I always had one cake that was generally a large sheet cake that would be divided into two sections. One side would say "Happy Birthday Holly" and the other would say "Happy Birthday Heather". When the girls got older, one of them told me they didn't like the fact that they had to share a cake. They wanted one cake each. It was so much cheaper to have the one large cake rather than two smaller ones. But she made her point, and I fully understood by that time because I had been a mommy and had got those dad-blasted combination gifts those years. So I'm sure you enjoyed having a "separate" Christmas and birthday. Happy belated Birthday! And LOVE the birthday giveaway you're having. dmj53(at)hotmail(dot)com

You know what? You should be like the Queen of England and have your Official Birthday on June 24th. I don't know the exact date of her official birthday, and to be honest I don't really care. But I think you should have one. So I am going to put in my calendar to send you birthday greetings on June 24.

  114. Hi Charlie,
My son's birthday is December 16th and we usually do try to make it separate. This year he wanted two tires for his car so we teased him and said that we bought him one tire for his birthday and the other for Christmas VBG We did give him a bit of money as well for his birthday and took him and his girlfriend out to dinner. He has been away over the Christmas break so we will still have a few nice things in a Christmas stocking when he and his girlfriend return from visiting family elsewhere.
My own birthday is in late November ( usually near American Thanksgiving).
What a nice thing for someone to do for you in July- we thought about an unbirthday for our son- perhaps we will try it sometime too.
Thanks for the opportunity to win such a nice layer cake.

  116. Hi Charlie!

    Happy Belated Birthday!!!!

My Daughters birthday is the beginning of January (this year will be her first birthday) and I have already set boundaries for family and friends that they are 2 separate occasions, and from reading what you have gone through I am glad that I have :)

What a great giveaway you are having!! I would love to enjoy using this layer cake to make a fabulous creation!! Thank you so much for the opportunity!!

  117. My poor sister in law was born on 1st January. Everyone is too partied out from the night before to remember. Fandango is one of my favourite collections from Kate and I would love to win it. Thanks for the opportunity to enter the contest and thanks for such an entertaining blog.

  118. It could be worse- my best friend's birthday is Christmas AND she's a twin!

  119. Wow, and I thought I had it bad, having a summer birthday and never a birthday party during the school year. But Christmas birthdays have it the worst, hands down! heheheh

  120. December birthdays really are the pits. My son's is the 5th, his son's is the 11th, my other grandson's is the 16th and my other grandson's mother's is the 23. And none of them get a real party or birthday present. It's always combined with Christmas. Hope your birthday was awesome. Love the Fandango layer cake by Kate Spain. Thanks for the chance to win.

  125. I have to admit I never envied the kids with the Christmas birthdays. Instead of Christmas in July, I think a half-birthday just for you every year would be an excellent idea! Happy Birthday and thanks for the great give away!

  126. Talk about not fair!! Yep, I could see where that would not be fun at all!! Well, Happy Belated! thanks for the fun giveaway!

  132. Happy birthday!! We have a grandson who turned 3 on Christmas day and two others who had birthdays the week before Christmas. I always feel sorry for my BIL who has a birthday on the 26th because everyone tends to "forget" that one. I think the Christmas birthdays should be celebrated in June!!!!

  133. I hope you had a wonderful day Charlie. Thank you for the giveaway.

  134. Happy (belated) Birthday, my brother was born on 29th December (today! Happy Birthday to my Bro!!) he always hated the joint Christmas/birthday thing too. I am entering this giveaway in the hope I win as.....I ordered Kate Spain 12 Days of Christmas layer cake on 7th December and it's still not arrived, so feeling very sorry for myself at the moment. Oh I love Kate Spain's fabric. Linda x

  135. My daughter and I both have birthdays in December, so we feel your pain. I always made sure that Jen had "a birthday". No Christmas paper on her packages and we never put the tree up until after her birthday. My other daughter's birthday is in January. That is almost as bad. What do you get for your birthday in January. I always saved the best presents for her birthday. I miss those days. The girls were both home for Christmas and now the house is quiet. It feels strange--it was just so right when we were all home together just hanging out. Now I need to get all my sewing stuff back out in the bedroom and get to work. Hope you had a great birthday!! Love Kate Spain too!

  137. Happy Birthday! I kinda understand, I was born on mother's day and my celebration always seems to be combined or overshadowed by mothers day.

  138. I've always thought that those of you who have b'days at this time of year get gypped! I'm lucky - mine is in June, 3 weeks before my sister's & 3 weeks after my Dad's. I wish you many more happy birthdays in July!

  139. I think if my Birthday was even in December I would always just celebrate my half Birthday. Its only fair that you get a day all about you! Thanks for the giveaway!

  140. I won't say Happy Birthday to you! I'll say thanks very much for giving a present to a lucky giveaway winner--the fabrics will inspire any quilter.

    Thank you for your generosity.

  144. Happy Late Birthday!
Here's another complaint - I'm a twin, and when we were kids, many many times we would get a present to share! People couldn't grasp the fact that we were 2 separate people! Or we would get the exact same thing - I guess they thought we had the exact same interests too! LOL!

  145. Happy belated birthday. It's a special time for you, with or without the presents. Thanks for celebrating with us.

  146. My brother's birthday is on Christmas Day...he really got the short end of the stick when it came to birthdays. There is more than one picture of him blowing out a birthday candle on a pumpkin pie because mom had forgotten to make him a cake. Hope you had a great day anyway...and thanks for an opportunity to win a great prize!

  147. My mom's birthday is December 18th so I always make it a point to celebrate her birthday separate from Christmas, down to the cards and wrapping paper. Happy Birthday to you and if I win the Fandango I will make my mom something special from it!

  148. Happy Birthday, I love your way of celebrating!
    Thanks, pokey

  149. Totally get the birthday thing - mine is Dec. 6th and my husbund actually got me a poinsetta our first year we were married. Amazing we are still together after 37 years - Chuckle.

  151. I am sorry your Birthday has such painful memories. As a Mom, a child is a blessing in any month including December. Parents make mistakes and its up to the next generation to do better. Happy Birthday to you.
