Fresh Modern Bee - November

Two blocks I made for Quilt Happie.  She left the door wide open and let us do anything we wanted as long as there was one red square in the block.

Not bad for making this up as I went along.
I love solids and I owe it all to Cherri House of Cherry House Quilts.

Giveaway Update:

Great news everyone. Big thank you to Fat Quarter Shop, who has agreed to sponsor our giveaway once we reach 500 followers.  Link is on the right.  Just 28 more followers to go.

Mindless Sewing

I'm going to do some mindless sewing.

That is what my facebook status read last night.

Here are two comments I got.

  • Quilting is never mindless, imho! Quilting is art! Don't sell yourself short, Charlie!

  • There are times when mindless sewing is relaxing. After challenging yourself to better your techniques or tackle new and difficult patterns, mindless sewing can be very gratifying!

I agree that quilting is not mindless, but there are times when our brain can't take working on a new project or technique.  We just want to go back to the basics and do some sewing that we don't need to think about what we are doing.  Just get in there and lose our self in the task at hand.

We designers are being pushed to come up with new and original idea each day.  Quilting is an ever growing, ever changing medium were we have to think quick and fast on that new idea to get it out there.  Sometimes that can take a lot of of a person and we just want to set back and enjoy our craft and not always have to think about the business side of quilting.

Last night I didn't do any quilting.  I went to work on my stacked coin quilt, but could not find the green sashing that I need to sew into it.  It's lost in my quilt room somewhere.  I spent the good part of 45 minutes playing with fabric and placing on my shelves.  Yes, this should of been done a long time ago, but life has just gotten in the way.  I wish I could say I'm an organized person, but I'm not.  I have piles of fabric here and there and everywhere.  I stop on one project to start another and there it sits.  Sometime I go back to the pile  and have forgotten what I was going to do with it.  I know now this ever happens to any of you.  lol

Flying geese is my basic mindless sewing.  I love how verstile they can be.

What kind of mindless sewing do you like to do?

Ruby Runner

Work asked me to do a sample for the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo that showed off our new Ruby sewing and embroidery machine. I wanted to showcase the large hoop and design placement.

I used some Bliss by Bonnie and Comille for Moda and some of my stash to complete this table runner.

Close up of the quilting. Crosshatching was done with walking foot. I used a serpentine stitch from the Ruby for the inner border and a wavy ruler to mark the outer border then the edge of the walking foot for spacing. See I really do know how to quilt.

Back view of quilting.

I used two of these sheets when I washed the table runner and this still happened.

It's only on the back and right around the stitching of the inner border. The inner border was a batik that I didn't prewash. I thought the color catcher would have taken care of it. I guess not.

Prewash all batiks before use.

It's A Boy!!!

My mother asked me to make her a baby quilt for a new great grandson that is due in January. She is hoping he will be born on her birthday.

I knew I wanted to do a quick quilt because my list is full with no end in site.

Chenille Baby Quilt

Items used to make quilt:
  • One charm pack of City Weekend
  • 1/2 yard chenille - Sashing
  • One Fat Quarter - Binding
  • 1 yard backing

I took a charm pack of City Weekend from Liesl Gibson for Oliver + S for Moda and added some white chenille sashing.

I sewed the charms into four rows of eight then added three 5" chenille sashing strips in between using 1/4" seam allowance through out.

Layer your top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired, bind and enjoy! Quilt measures 31" x 36"

Close up of quilting. I used one of the decorative stitches from my machine. Caution : This takes more thread and is slow, but the results are great and worth it. Could be done with straight lines too.

I had the top done in 30 minutes max. It took me longer to quilt and bind. I did my binding on the bias.

Tips for working with chenille:
  • Cut chenille to the length of the charm strips.
  • Chenille will streach. Place on bottom next to feed dogs.
  • Pin charm strips to chenille.
  • I didn't quilt the chenille as it would be hard to quilt. (at least I would think so)
  • I used only a 1/4" seam. Not 1/2" as some told me to use and it turned out fine. It's holding.
  • The secret to working with chenille is don't do anything to it. Just let it be.
These are just my tips and I'm sure others will have their own. :-)

More Fabric? Yes!!!

My stash this week.

Jelly roll of Bliss by Bonnie & Camille for Moda

17 yards of Kona Solids found on sale at Jo-Ann's.  I think I finely  have enough.
I would say I have about 60 yards total of solids.  Maybe now I can make a quilt.
Found these at Jo-Ann's
Closer view of tree print.  I really like how the pink & gray look with one another.
There is more fabric on it way, but it's not in yet.
Maybe I can get a quilt or two done now.  I have a few in the works, but I can;t show them just yet.

Until next time,
